Despite the conservationist submitting joint petition to the government on the environmental concern over the proposed Shingkhar-Gorgan highway, the government has decided to go ahead with its decision.
Though conservation is important, I personally think peoples' welfare should be placed at forefront than feral animals' welfare. As hon'ble PM has pointed out 'the whole of Bhutan is a park.' The price we Bhutanese face due to more conservation efforts are; rampant incidences of bears mauling men, wild elephants causing destruction to the human dwellings, tigers and other cat families killing domestic animals, monkeys and wild boars destroying farmers' hard rippened harvest.
Some has mentioned that we get lots of donor coming in because of the environment preservation, but what I think is they have exhausted their resources to the fullest for the purpose the development of their country and they wanted us to preserve and showcase it for the world. Thats why bits and pieces of funds are pouring in and we are still at the developing stage. Had we utilized our resources as much as others did, I think we must have measured higher hights in terms of our development.
Thus, paving road for the purpose of our development should not be deprived by motive for the conservation. I am for the hon'ble PM's note that "the road causing habitat fragmentation and ecological disaster at the Thrumsingla National Park was difficult to comprehend when highway network in the country ran through many parks...." & "It does not hold water as tigers particularly can maneuver the most difficult of terrains and is a highly adaptable and robust animal...."
While I support conservation I think it should not be done at least at the cost of our peoples' wellbeing. This is what I feel as a non-specialist or non-environmentalist for the conservation.
